Students Wishing to Go on Exchange to Germany

Every year over 50 Queensland students go with SAGSE, Qld Inc to Germany. SAGSE Qld Inc is a non-profit organization comprising a committee of people interested in the promotion of German language and culture. The committee works on a voluntary basis to send more than 50 Queensland school students as a group to Germany on exchange and 50 from Germany to Queensland. every year. The exchange is for 6 weeks, leaving at the end of November or beginning of December and returning mid-January. The cost of the exchange is approximately $3,600 + pocket money. The airfares and a one-week bus tour to Bavaria are included in the cost. Homestays are arranged with host families in the areas of Nordrhein-Westfalen (mainly in the city of Essen) and in the state of Hessen at no cost.

Interested students of German in Years 10, 11 and 12 should complete the Application to Travel to Germany form and send it, together with a short written piece about yourself giving your reasons for participating in an exchange, and a $25 fee. Ask your German teacher to post it by the due date or post it yourself.

Students must be prepared to undergo an interview in English and German to confirm their suitability to participate in the exchange.

Australian Students Wishing to Billet a German Exchange Student

In July this year more than 50 German students will be arriving in Brisbane and we are looking for families willing to host these exchange students for about 6 weeks. During this time the students go on an organized tour of Queensland for about 11 days. Exact dates will be supplied later when they have been confirmed.

We would appreciate all offers, especially from families who would like to send their children to Germany on a future exchange. It is not necessary, however, to plan a reciprocal visit as many benefits can be gained by having a student in the home for a few weeks.

Most of the students who come here every year are aged between 15 and 18 years and we try to match them with host-brothers or -sisters who are in the same age group. However, students with an older brother or sister who would agree to share the responsibility of looking after a German student are also welcome to apply. Boys and girls willing to host a boy are particularly desired.

Teachers, please show the SAGSE Application to Billet a German Student form to your students and help them to complete it with the information and signatures required. We really rely upon and appreciate your help in finding this large number of families every year. I’m sure you have observed the benefits to be gained by having an exchange student or two in your classes. They can contribute much cultural information, help with speaking and writing tasks and can be used to read or write articles for your students to use in class or in tests. It is not just the students who gain from the experience!
